BMW has expanded its R12 retro twin lineup with the introduction of the R12 GS, a dual-purpose adventure machine paying homage to the iconic R80 G/S from the 1980s. Designed to excel both on and off the road, the R12 GS has retro aesthetics along with modern features, making it a drool-worthy option for adventure enthusiasts.
Bringing the BMW R12 GS to life is a robust 1170cc air/oil-cooled boxer twin engine, churning out 107.3 bhp at 7000 rpm and 115 Nm of torque at 6500 rpm. It is mated to a 6-speed gearbox. The German brand has also provided an adjustable gear lever that can make way for your full-blown chunkier off-road riding boots. Apart from that, the high-mounted left-side exhaust helps protect against damage on rugged trails.
Built on a tubular steel space frame, the bike tips the weighing scale at 229 kg (kerb) and includes two steel eyelets for securing luggage. It comes equipped with a 15.5-litre fuel tank and features a tall steering angle for better manoeuvrability.
The standard configuration includes a 21-inch front spoked wheel and a 17-inch rear wheel, with a solo rider seat positioned at 860 mm. Opting for the Enduro Package Pro bumps the rear wheel to 18 inches and raises the seat height to 875 mm.
For tall or advanced riders who prefer even more height, the Rallye Seat option boosts the seat to 880 mm with a 17-inch wheel or a towering 895 mm with an 18-inch wheel.
Riders can choose from three standard modes – Rain, Road, and Enduro – while the Enduro Package Pro unlocks an additional ‘Enduro Pro’ mode that deactivates rear ABS for an untamed off-road experience.
Suspension duties are handled by fully adjustable 45 mm upside-down forks with 210 mm of travel up front and 200 mm at the rear, backed by a Paralever swingarm.
Braking is provided by twin 310 mm discs with two-piston floating calipers at the front and a 265 mm rotor with a two-pot caliper at the rear, complete with cornering ABS.
Available in four vibrant color options in international markets, the BMW R12 GS should be able to appeal to a wide range of enthusiasts.
