Yamaha is set to reveal one of its most anticipated sportbikes, the 2025 YZF-R9, on October 9, 2024. Teased across Yamaha’s social media channels, the new R9 is expected to fill the gap between the YZF-R7 and the flagship YZF-R1, solidifying its position in Yamaha’s sportbike lineup.
The YZF-R9 will be based on the popular MT-09 platform, sharing its 888cc inline-three-cylinder engine. This engine produces 118 bhp and 93 Nm of torque on the MT-09 and will likely offer similar performance on the R9, paired with a six-speed gearbox.
Visually, the R9 is expected to follow Yamaha’s signature design language, borrowing elements from both the R1 and R7 while incorporating its own distinct styling. Early teaser images hint at a sleek, blue sportbike with sharp LED lighting, much like its siblings. The subframe and exhaust design appear to carry over from the MT-09, though with some potential tweaks to suit the sportier stance.
As Yamaha phases out the road-legal R1 in Europe, the R9 will likely step in to compete in the Supersport class, though its 890cc engine might necessitate rule changes. Speculation also suggests a higher-spec R9M variant, akin to the YZF-R1M, could be in the pipeline. All eyes are now on the October 9 unveiling, as Yamaha enthusiasts eagerly await the dawn of this new era.
