Yamaha is stepping into the hybrid motorcycle space, joining Kawasaki in exploring petrol-electric two-wheelers. A recently surfaced video reveals a Yamaha hybrid motorcycle prototype undergoing testing, signaling the Japanese company’s intent to develop this emerging technology.
The Yamaha hybrid motorcycle prototype employs a unique series-parallel hybrid system, featuring a conventional internal combustion engine, a crank-mounted motor generator, and an axle-mounted electric motor. This setup enables three distinct drive modes: full EV, hybrid engine drive, and boost mode for additional power.
In full EV mode, the bike relies solely on its electric motor. In hybrid mode, the engine kicks in to drive the rear wheel and recharge the battery simultaneously. The highlight, however, is Yamaha’s dual and triple boost modes, where both the engine and electric motors work together for enhanced acceleration—ideal for overtaking.
Although the Yamaha hybrid motorcycle prototype appears functional, the brand has clarified that the technology remains in the research and development phase. If a production hybrid model does emerge, it is likely to feature a refined design and enhanced capabilities.
