Riding the Tech 3 Yamaha, Johann Zarco showed his talent and skills at the Austin GP of 2018 MotoGP last weekend. He has got four podiums and three pole positions to his name, and all that in just over a season with the big guns. Latest news tells that the French rider has switched teams, and signed up a deal with Red Bull KTM.
We have been hearing a rumor since Nov last year about Zarco showing interest in Red Bull KTM. It looks like that it isn’t a rumor anymore. Zarco did make a deal with Red Bull KTM for a two-year contract. The decision was made after the race at the Austin GP.
Speaking about the deal, KTM Motorsport Director Pit Beirer, said, “I cannot say anything about our future MotoGP factory team, unfortunately, you have to speculate. All I know is that Honda is also very interested in Zarco. KTM, of course, [CEO] Stefan Pierer has already told you once. It’s no secret that Johann Zarco is interested in us…”
Repsol Honda and Suzuki too were in the loop of hiring Zarco. But Suzuki went ahead with Alex Rins, and if Zarco goes with Honda, he would have to be the number two alongside with Marc Marquez, the reigning world champion.
In KTM, Zarco is expected to team up with Pol Espargaro replacing Bradley Smith. KTM has improved their bikes over the course of time, but they still need to cover a long distance. It might be a bit of a trouble for Zarco to get used to the new KTM RC16s.
We are expecting an official announcement by Red Bull KTM regarding Zarco’s contract pretty soon. The 27-year-old Frenchman currently shares the fourth position in MotoGP standings, sharing the spot with Cal Crutchlow.
