Indian Motorcycle is known for making some of the finest V-twin cruiser motorcycles that money can buy. But there’s another aspect of the company that keeps putting it in the news – Flat Track Racing. The FTR750 is doing wonders in the world of motorsports. And being inspired by this machine, Indian Motorcycle built a one-off FTR1200 Custom and showcased it at the 2017 EICMA. Now, it has decided to start manufacturing the FTR1200.

The announcement was made at the Wheels & Waves festival in France. In addition to announcing production intentions, Indian also announced a prize draw where riders can enter to win one of the first bikes to come off the assembly line.

Speaking about the news, Steve Menneto, President, Indian Motorcycle, said, “When we unveiled the FTR1200 Custom at EICMA, we said we’d listen to feedback from riders around the world. Riders definitely have spoken and the response has been overwhelming. We’re proud and excited to announce that we will be putting the FTR 1200 into production.”

After presenting the FTR1200 Custom at the EICMA, and doing a world tour with it, Indian Motorcycle waited for the feedback from the riders. The feedbacks were clear for the company to proceed with the production. “We wanted to make sure that the FTR 1200 wasn’t merely a regurgitation of the FTR1200 Custom, but something uniquely ‘street,’ albeit flat track inspired,” said Christoph. “We’re thrilled about the character this bike possesses and its ability to take American V-twin motorcycles into new territory.”

The production variant of the FTR1200 would have some common elements with the Custom built model that we’ve already seen. But it won’t be a pure flat-track motorcycle. It will take inspiration, design and performance cues from its concept and the FTR750, but will maintain a look and style all of its own.

“From the very beginning, our intention was to develop Indian Motorcycle into a global brand,” said Michael Dougherty, President, International. “Armed with a strong foundation, it’s now time to break new ground for an American motorcycle manufacturer and the FTR 1200 is where that begins.”

Indian gave privilege to a select few VIPs from the industry to view an early production version of the FTR 1200 behind closed doors at Wheels & Waves. This shows how serious Indian is with this bike. However, it didn’t disclose any specification or an exact launch date. It is being anticipated that the sale can begin from 2019.
